Reiki initiation is a process of receiving Reiki attunement which takes place at each of the three levels of Western Reiki.

You do not need to receive Reiki initiation if you are simply receiving treatments from a qualified professional. However, if you wish to learn more about this wonderful healing art and self-realization tool then you might want to explore Reiki attunement and further training and education.

The initiations or attunements are performed by a Master. You reach Master status after detailed training and attunement by another Master who is qualified to teach and train.

However, when you think about attunement to Reiki you should not think about it as receiving the attunement. Instead, the Master facilitates the initiation to Reiki. This healing art is all about channeling and optimizing your own energy. You are not receiving that energy from anybody else. You are simply being shown how to channel your own healing energy the right way to heal yourself or to heal others.

Hopefully you will be approaching this with a realistic view of what Reiki can do and what it cannot do. More and more, this healing art is being accepted into the mainstream of conventional medicine as a complementary alternative which works hand in hand with other healing methods.

The areas where it is most helpful seem to be pain management, stress and anxiety control, and relaxation. All of these are very important to the healing process. They are also widely used for self-realization and overall well-being.

As one of the better energy healing techniques, it is a great discipline to explore further. Essentially, Reiki draws from the best of all of the energy healing arts so you cover a lot and it makes great sense to pursue Reiki even if your main interest lies in other energy healing techniques.

When going through Reiki initiation there is a process of preparation for the Reiki attunement which is in itself very pleasant and fulfilling. Indeed, some people receive it just for the personal benefit!

The process of preparation is quite personal and involves mental and physical steps to cleanse the mind and body for an optimal attunement. And after the initiation there is a 21 day process of reinforcement.

Because you are essentially invoking your own energy the process can happen in the presence of the Master or remotely. The most important consideration is the pedigree and experience of the Master. With a great Master you will receive a great Reiki initiation!

Reiki Courses and Levels

Reiki (pronounced ray kee) is a Japanese word made up of two characters, rei meaning spirit and ki or life force. The term is usually translated universal life energy or life force.

The closest parallel in Western philosophy to the practice of Reiki is faith healing or the laying on of hands in a spiritual sense. The Reiki practitioners believe the the life force is channeled through the bodies to the hands where it can be sent into the body of the client or patient. This is done through two processes, first attunement to receive the flow of the life force by the Reiki master, then the positioning of the hands and sometimes other parts of the body such as the eyes or the breath to channel this flow to the patient.

Those who wish to become Reiki therapists under traditional Usui Reiki must learn from a Reiki master in an unbroken line from the original Grand Master. According to traditionalists, Reiki cannot be learned; it must be experienced.

All training courses in the United States originate from the Grand Master, Mrs. Hawayo Takata who claimed to be a student of one of the students trained by Usui. Although some of her claims are not able to be confirmed, such as the statement that no Reiki Grand Masters in Japan survived World War II, she trained at least 21 masters in the years between 1970 and 1980 in the traditional Usui method.

Even amongst traditionalists, the Reiki course will differ somewhat, as some Masters do not teach students to pass on the method to others, only to use it in healing. Others insist to be recognized as a Master, the student must be able to teach the techniques.

The traditional Reiki course consists of three levels, Levels I and II can usually be mastered in one 6-8 hour session for each component. Level I for example would include information about the history of Reiki, a ceremonial process called attunement, which is a structured formalized series of movements, chants, hand positions and touching, provided by the Master to each of the students. There are four attunements during the Level I course. Also included in Level I is practice of the hand positions required for Self-Attunement and later, practice of the same hand positions as they are used on another person. The Level I Reiki is completed with the first session.

Some people elect to stop at Level I, but others choose to continue to Level II Reiki. The second course is taught in two 3 hours sessions, sometimes separated by over night, but at least 2 hours must elapse between the first and second sessions in order to provide learning and memorization of the names and descriptions of the Reiki symbols. These symbols are important to the practitioners and must be called and drawn correctly so that they may be visualized correctly when applying attunement or therapy to oneself or to others. Two more attunements are given during the Level II course.

At Level III, a divergence of opinion among Masters occurs. Some treat Level III as a continuation of Level II with additional emphasis on both the symbols and channeling the life energy, as well as practicing distance healing; while others believe that to complete Level III, sometimes called Reiki Master Level, the student must successfully teach others the techniques of Reiki.

Hi. I'm attuned as a Reiki Master and it was hands-on.

During this attunement I was far more aware of the actual symbol as it was instilled than I had been in the previous attunements. And for a few days after it was predominant in my thoughts ( I saw it clearly when I shut my eyes, like the afterglow of a lightbulb) and I felt suffused by the energy it carried.

My awareness of the energy passing from my master to me was greatly enhanced and I could feel the energy flow around me as she enacted the ritual. I was aware of a swirling aura of colours and had an amazingly strong glow through my heart chakra; and a great, big grin on my face! There was a picture of a sea-scape on the wall behind and it was like the waves were moving! I also had a very clear and vivid picture of my reiki guide.

I had come through all attunements with this master and after each we chose a small crystal off a tray, as a gift. During my Master's attunement I had a very clear image of which crystal to choose and why.

It was all pretty awsome and with four of us attuned in the same room, the energy was amazing.

The most memorable physical effect was that I felt taller like a weight had stopped pressing on me and I even banged my head because my spacial awareness was scewed. I felt very light and loose limbed like gravity had eased off.

The rest of the day was somewhat unreal. As I was driving home later I realised that even though I was going 60mph I was unaware of the speed in the usual way. It was like there was a huge bubble around me that extended well out beyond the car and everything in the bubble was calm. I was somehow distanced from the movement, even the noise.

I had to go and check my horse on the way home and when I walked into her field she came over and stopped about fifteen feet from me, pawed at the ground and gave out the loudest neigh I have ever heard from her. She then walked up to me and put her forehead directly on my heart. When I put my hands on her neck she glowed with a pink aura and my hands 'melted' into her.

It was cool and there were so many amazing experiences that day as the four of us each shared our energy afterwards. It does take reiki further and I went through some pretty strong 'past-life' stuff in the following weeks and uncovered emotional hurt that was buried way deep. It's like another layer of the onion gets peeled away.
