If the retail price of a book or DVD is $30, how much did the retailer buy it for from the wholesaler?

I'm referring to retailers such as Borders or Tower Records.I hope people who have experience working in retail stores are able to answer my question thank you.

Most workers in retail don't even know the answer to that as the company doesn't let them know the original purchase price. I have a friend who is the music manager at a Barnes & Noble and even with his discount he generally pays more than Circuit City and Best Buy charge.

Generally, though, wholesale price is between 35-50% of retail price depending on the size of the retailer. You should never, ever pay retail unless you absolutely have to do so.
